OUR STUDENTS
There are two options to sponsoring a child - sponsoring a student for Academics or for the Leadership Program, each $45/monthly. We currently have 6 students who are enrolled in both the academy and the leadership program, which means they are the only students that require both sponsorships.

The extra $45 for the Leadership Program Children is to help cover cost of an intensive leadership program that allows us to board the 6 children 5 days a week where they receive extra care, skills training, tutoring, and community outreach opportunities, that is in addition to the 8am-2pm Academics every student receives.
LEADERSHIP PROGRAM CHILDREN
*Please note: All Leadership Program Children are currently sponsored for their academics, but some are still seeking sponsorship of $45 for the leadership program.
EDDISSON is a gentle and helpful boy, with a strong will and a stubborn edge. He melts into hugs and has the most affectionate smile that demonstrates his sweet tender spirit. He is one of those kids that is in a metamorphosis process completely changing from the inside out. He comes from a negligent home environment. His mom died when he was little and his dad is around town, but not a part of his life. He lives with his grandma and little brother. Eddisson has learned to be a tough street boy, wandering the streets, afraid of nothing. He has no one to come home to because his grandma works at another home until late. He is basically raising himself and his little brother, Kenson. Because of his home life, we have worked through a lot of emotional blocks, but be happy to know we have seen incredible growth since having Eddisson in the academy since 2017.

Despite his home life, Eddisson is the perfectionist of the class. He does everything with great care and excellence. He has really begun to excel in languages being one of the top students in the class. This is especially exciting when we know that he is a child that society would have given up on. He likes to be the best in everything. If he wins, he is always elated, but when he loses, he is quickly demotivated. He is a boy with a lot of potential. He is an incredibly hard worker who gladly helps others. He is one of the strongest kids, but has a great need for encouragement and confirmation. He likes to know if he is doing well and often asks the teacher if his work is good.

LOVEDANA is our only student whose parents live in the countryside about an hour away by moto taxi. She lives with her dad, who cares for goats and gardens, her mom, and four beautiful sisters. She is intelligent, loves math and languages and is very good at it. She has an amazing ability to catch onto any subject or lesson the first time learning it or just a few tries. However, she tends to want to work too fast and makes little mistakes. She likes to be challenged, so in class competitions she can lose herself in a strength and boldness she doesn’t show outside of the classroom.

LoveDana understands a great deal of English and French, but can be more resistant to respond back with English or French when it is spoken to her. LoveDana is always participating in class. She is an excellent student in the classroom despite being one of the youngest students of her grade. She is an affectionate child often giving hugs and craves attention desiring to please. Always room to grow, but overall she is a wonderful delight to be around.

ROSE DERLINE is one of those kids that just aims to please and often does. She is kind hearted, thoughtful of others, studious, and respectful. She comes from a loving home where they spoil her when they can. She lives with both her parents and two siblings. In school, she is always up to par.

Rose Derline loves learning, doing excellent work in math and both languages. Often times, without even being called upon, she will offer translation of the teachers instructions for the kids who didn’t quite understand. She catches on really fast to new lessons and is always working hard. She is quite confident, but still likes to check-in with her teachers to see how she is performing, needing those occasional positive reinforcements. She is perhaps the strongest leader/mother hen of the class, always helping others and keeping her classmates on task and corrected, if need be.

SCHNYDER was a child with spotted potential a solid year before HSMS even started. He was a darling, witty little barefoot boy who caught even an adults intrigue. He is incredibly lovable right down to his cheeky smile. However, his potential is far from nurtured at his home of an often MIA mom and 4 other siblings who barely get meals day to day if the mom shows up or the dad happens to sleep at the house bringing some money.

Schnyder has grown leaps and bounds in HSMS Academy & Leadership Program under a constant and stimulating environment of love and structure. He has become our strongest English and French speaker with excellent pronunciation that even surprises our staff. He shines like a star in language, but often gets sloppy in other subjects needing extra motivation as they don’t interest him as much. Typically, Schnyder glows with joy, but has his off moments where he gets into a slump totally disengaged. Often the medicine to a quick rebound is a hug and a moment of direct connection.

SCHNYDERSON is our little class clown whose mission is to make others giggle. He shows exceptional comprehension and speed in mathematics as he finds it a breeze to learn. He was the very last child selected for our first HSMS Academic year and our school wouldn’t be the same without him. But he is what you would call, "a disadvantaged child." He had never been to school before he started with HSMS. His single mom didn’t seem to be bothered that he among four others of his nine siblings would not be in school that year. His mom seems oblivious to any care for her kids, so Schnyderson, being the witty and charismatic kid that he is, is often found around lounging around young adult guys who are amused by him. He is street savvy and liked by young and old in his ghetto neighborhood.

Schyderson was an influencer on the streets and has become a delightful example of redirected leadership. He makes people laugh and when hugged, melts into the affection he lacks from home. He has a great head on his shoulders with lots of opportunity ahead in his future. In school, he stills needs that extra motivation and encouragement especially in subjects other than math. His ‘entertainment’ used to be disruptive to the class, but with class discipline, he does pretty well at choosing the right times. He can be sensitive to correction and an alone talk is often needed to reaffirm approval and love for him.

FIRST GRADE

ANGELICA is the most reserved in the class. She often gets distracted. Her lack of confidence often holds her back but when she gets the right answer she beams with joy. She loves affection, often times in group-learning, she inches her way closest to the teacher to hug her.

Please Enter a name or "New Student"

ANNE KENSHAÏNA is a strong willed girl. She often is leaning left and right to engage with her classmates rather than her book work. Originally, Anne Kenshaïna was going to go into 2nd grade. However, her French level was not to par and she was brand new to the English program so with her parents we decided to give her a better foundation by keeping her in 1st grade. This turned out to be just what she needed and now she is performing well in the classroom.

ANNE NÉHÉMIE is a marvelous student! She sits in the back and although her temperament is quiet in nature, she seems to always have the right answer. She has fantastic encouragement at home from her parents as well as her own tablet, that makes her sometimes even ahead of the class in learning. She loves school and anything new is a challenge that she doesn’t take long to conqueror. Across the board, in handwriting, language and mathematics, she is excelling. Her only challenge is to speak out with more confidence.

BELIEVE is a twin to her sister Belie who did not progress as well as her and stayed in Kindergarten one more year in order to get better prepared for 1st grade. Believe is a tiny little thing who shows a lot of promise. She comes from an area of town that most wouldn’t expect high results, but Believe is showing her intelligence by progressing quite nicely in her class. She loves to read.

JUDROY started the school year giving his teachers question about how he would do in our intensive bilingual program. He is very to himself and quiet to answer. However, he has surprised his teachers in both English and French as he is quite intelligent. He was once a student, we were most concerned about, now he is in the top 5 readers in the class.

KEV-YANIE is fantastic in the classroom. She is a steady student catching onto whatever new concepts that are introduced. She is delightful to teach, rarely giving any problems in the classroom. She is very attentive and follows along in the class. She is an excellent reader and her language in both French and English is great.

LOVELIE just came to HSMS in 2020-2021. She was held back because she missed a lot of last year at her old school, so needed the catch up. She makes strides her and there as she is tracking along with the HSMS program. She is always repeating with the loudest voice, but sometimes repeats without understanding. She loves math and is quickest to give responses to the bigger equations. She thrives on encouragement in the classroom and she is eager to please but is easily discouraged when she doesn’t give the correct response.

LUCIANNE started this year at HSMS. She comes from a bi-racial family in which she already spoke Kreyol and English fluently. She has jumped into the top of the class in the English program. However, she had very little to no French ability in the beginning of this school year. We knew that French would be her challenge and her French teacher has taken the challenge head-on. Lucianne has worked incredibly hard and is now doing a fantastic job in the French program. She is very studious, diligent in her work, and a delight to teach.

METUSCHELO is energetic and loves to participate. He just started at HSMS for 2020-21, so he has had to work extra hard. He likes to come to the board to answer questions in front of the class. He enjoys math more than languages but he is keeping up. He has a sweet smile and a great attitude.

Please Enter a name or "New Student"

MONICA started this year in 1st Grade. Her dad was ecstatic to learn of a school like HSMS in Jeremie and immediately enrolled her here. Monica is quite intelligent. She has excellent diction and is very studious in her class work. She is never a problem in class. Sometimes she can be mopey in class at times with her head on the desk but is always still following along. She is a great addition to the academic program and will surely show great progress in her education here.

RONALDO has an adorable smile and a sweet spirit. He started new with us this year and from his first evaluation, we weren’t sure if this intensive program would be good for him. However, we have been pleasantly surprised as Ronaldo is doing quite well. He is a top reader in the class in English and he is eager to practice communicating in both English and French. Outside of getting distracted often and having to reel Ronaldo back in, he will do well with the HSMS program.

ROSE CAËLLE is a new HSMS student of 2020-21. While others students had an advantage having the English base in Kindergarten, Rose Caëlle came in with great discipline and is an eager learner. She is quiet but engaged in class. She likes to fidget quite a bit especially with Ronaldo who sits by her. Despite being distracted at times she surprises me and can follow right along with the correct answers. She is progressing nicely in both French and English. She is quite intelligent and an easy student to teach.

SALANDE is very bright. She is nearly always finished with her work first in class. She is also new to HSMS this year but has launched to the top of the class, even in English. She catches on to new concepts the first time taught. She is quiet but fiercely intelligent and no doubt will be a top performer at HSMS in both our French and English programs. She is reading at a good level and is very quick on her math flashcards.

SAMA has always shown a lot of promise academically. She is confident and bold in the classroom. She is our little ‘classroom police’ often letting the teacher know who is not repeating. This often gets her into trouble for talking too much or out of turn. She is highly intelligent and is a student who needs extra challenges while others haven’t caught on as quickly as her. Sama is one of the top students in her class in both French and English in reading and pronunciation.

SAPHIRA is such a tender little girl. She has a heart-melting smile. She loves to get and give hugs. She is slower to catch on in the class so we have to give her extra attention but she is eager to learn. She often asks to have extra time with her teacher during recess.

YAHYA is a good kid. He has a sweet temperament and a quiet personality. He really makes an effort even when he is slower to catch on than most of the class. He needs extra help to keep up but with tutoring after school we are seeing him progress.

SECOND GRADE

EMMANUELLA also lives at Hopestart orphanage with Richardson, Sarah, Sabrina, Kim, and Modeliene. Emmanuella was abandoned and IBERS, the social services in Haiti, placed her at Hopestart when she was one year old. She is small, but mighty. She has a lot of sass packed into her little body.

Emmanuella is a great student- almost always on task, listening, and participating. She is very intelligent and also very social. She is curious and touches and explores everything around her. Emmanuella does really well academically but struggles slightly in sounding out letters. She always ready to answer her teachers and participate.

PRUNA has a half sister and lives in a family taken care of by both her mom and dad in a safe and loving home. Her dad found out about HSMS 3 months into the school year and was ready to immediately transfer her because of the quality of education and personal development he knew Pruna would get at HSMS.

Pruna came in speaking only creole and was at base level in all subjects. By the end of the year, she shown great progression in both French and English and is ready for 1st grade. She is a sweet spirit and shows a lot of sass. Pull out a camera and she will strike several poses! Coming from a good home, she is a student who will really benefit from a great jumpstart of education and loving care found at HSMS. Her family is thrilled with the opportunity she has found with us.

RICHARDSON lives at Hopestart orphanage with 35 other children. He was placed in the orphanage when he was a year old. His father is unknown and at the time he was living with his mother who was mentally ill. He is very intelligent. After hearing something in class only one time he will remember and know it well. He does his work almost perfectly every time and is very advanced for his age. The only thing he struggles with slightly is his handwriting, which is not too much a concern as all the children are in the beginning stages of learning how to write.

Richardson is usually very eager to give responses in class because he always knows the correct answer, but once called on to answer he shies away. He will cover his mouth, turn his head or look down, and say the answer in a quiet voice. He hates being the center of attention or being put on the spot. During music and movement he will be dancing and singing until someone looks at him, then he will stop and clam up. He still makes friends and has fun but is okay just being by himself too.

SARAH also lives at Hopestart orphanage with 35 other children. We do not know a lot about her history or how she ended up at the orphanage. She is five years old and in our Kindergarten class. Sarah loves school and loves to learn. She has a strong presence about her when she is in a familiar setting. Outside of her comfort zone she can be very quiet.

Sarah has come a long way from being very emotional and uneasy meeting new people to now, she is flourishing and very social, especially in class. Sarah is particularly good at handwriting and phonics. She is intelligent and at the top of the class. She loves competition and loves to win so any games we play in class she is all about and puts all her effort forth. She is very determined and always on a mission.

THIRD GRADE

BETHSAIDA comes from a close and solid family. She lives with both her parents and she has two brothers and two sisters. She is very bright and is at the top of the class. After explaining a concept with her only once or twice she will remember it and understand it and almost always completes her work with perfection. The only thing she struggles with in the classroom is speaking either French or English instead of using Creole. Her temperament can change from day to day. Some days she will come to school with a very somber attitude, still ready to learn, but has a sadness about her. Other days she comes filled with joy, smiling and giggling and jumping all around. Her parents said she is the same at home; some days she will want to be alone and other days she is playing with her siblings. She is a sweet girl with a kind heart and almost never misbehaves. She is an excellent student and is also very affectionate, loves hugs and being held.

GAVENSON comes from a well-rounded home. His parents are still together and his dad is a teacher. He has one older brother. His parents had plans to keep him in his previous school and even bought the uniform for that school, but after hearing about our school, they were eager to get Gavenson in. They are both very pleased with the school and continue to see big strides in his English and French.

Gavenson is very quiet for the most part unless there is some sort of activity, game, or event, then he gets WILD and it’s so unexpected from a normally shy boy. He was struggling in the beginning of the year to keep up with the other students, but eventually it just clicked for him. He still has a difficult time with numbers, but is getting better.

JAMESLEY used to live in the countryside with his three brothers and two sisters; he is theyoungest. His mother died and his dad is very negligent- letting the kids run wild day in and day out. Two of his brothers now live at an orphanage while someone else took in him and another brother. His sisters are still in the countryside and both have kids of their own. Before starting at HSMS this year, Jamesley had hardly been to school at all. There was a small school in the countryside where he lived but the teachers were under qualified and no one made sure that he was dressed and sent to school in the mornings so a lot of times he wouldn’t go.

To say he is thriving at HSMS is an understatement. He is very intelligent and is well-rounded in all subjects. He has made friends very easily and loves to play sports with the boys on the playground. At any moment he bursts out into hysterical laughter after the simplest of jokes and is filled with joy!
SPONSORED!
KIM is a sheer delight to be around. Sometimes quiet, but then comes to life around those that she has formed a bonding relationship of care and trust. She was an abandoned baby at the hospital who was taken into the HopeStart Orphanage here in Jeremie about 5 years ago. Kim is not at the top of her class intellectually, but is highly motivated to work hard which encourages the teacher to give her extra boosts of confidence and encouragement to help her succeed academically. With her continued hard work and maintained focus, she is succeeding along with the others. Her language acquisition is a bit slower. We are working hard to keep her with our dual language immersion method so one day it will just ‘click’.

Kim is a sensitive girl, but she tries not to get caught up in her emotions. She gets daily hugs and positive encouragement she needs to be able to do the task. Once, more on the lazy side, with the love she finds at HSMS, she is showing new growth every week.

MARC-SONY, who goes by Max, was our last first grade student to come into our class. He
actually started in the month of November. We weren’t sure if he would be able to catch up with other students, but knowing that his dad speaks both fluent French and English gave us confidence. He is doing great now and is even one of our strongest readers. Math is not his strong suit, but he is doing very well considering he was almost two months behind the other students.

Max's mother, who had 8 children, died in a river-related accident. His dad is a fisherman and he had since disappeared. Some of his brothers and sisters were put into orphanages, some were sent to live with their grandma, and some were adopted. Max was adopted by one of our good friends and Boarding School staff members here at HSMS. He is full of life and very playful. He is always chatting or humming and any single moment of unstructured time he is playing. His advancement in class has been amazing. He is an active boy and loves to learn.

MIDSSAELLE always has a smile on her face. She is full of joy and RARELY ever gets upset. She may be a favorite of some around here, although we aren’t supposed to have favorites right? ;) Her dad died and she lives with her mom and two sisters.

Midsaelle is doing well academically with reading being her strength. She is just starting to use English and French instead of speaking Creole and is reminded often to speak the languages we are teaching instead of Creole. She loves playing and is a very affectionate little girl, always wanting hugs which we don’t mind giving!

SPONSORED!
NEHEMIE has a quiet and gentle spirit. Her dad died and she now lives with her Aunt and two older siblings. Due to complications with skull formation when she was little, Nehemie has a skin deformity on the back of her head that doesn’t allow hair to grow. Despite this small deformity, Nehemie is still confident in who she is. The beginning of the year proved this when other kids would point it out or ask about it, she didn’t shy away from talking about it.

Nehemie is a very well behaved student and is always on task. Reading is her strong point, and while she struggles with math, she makes an effort everyday to get better. She is shy and sticks to playing low-key games with just a couple close friends on the playground.

SABRINA lives at an orphanage with 35 other children. She is one among six kids from that
orphanage that come to school at HSMS. She was one of our very first students last year in first grade. We decided that we would keep Sabrina in first grade this year. She started falling behind last year and really stopped putting in effort due to her lack of confidence.

This year has been great for her to boost her confidence and Sabrina has become a leader in the class academically. She is very bright and is a light to those around her. She has a spunky personality and is a social butterfly, making it easy for her to make and keep friends.

FOURTH GRADE

BRANHAM is a sensitive boy with a calm character. He is our little artist in the class. He sings and dances through his day. Branham is blessed to be at home where both parents are present and raising him in a stable household.

In School, Branham especially excels in French over English, but makes good effort to achieve in both languages. The arts stimulate Branham, we find him excelling in the HSMS Music School as one of the best students. He does well in the music theory class, singing class, and in instrument practice, where he is taking piano lessons.

WENSLEY is an only child being raised by a single mom. His mom works hard to provide for Wensley’s education, extremely grateful to send him to such a good school as HSMS. Wensley is blind in one eye from when he was little, sand was thrown in his eye. After many doctor visits, it was determined he would never see from that eye. Despite this setback, He is an extremely joyful and energetic child. He is emotionally stable, knowing he is loved and receives correction well.

Wensley is intelligent and catches on fast. During tests and review games, he shows that he is tracking along quite well with the class. Unlike most of the other students, he seems to be a bit stronger in language than mathematics, but is growing all around from the beginning of the school year. In his school work, he takes time to do quality work. Sometimes he gets tired in class and seems to need a bit of extra stimulation and encouragement. He typically participates throughout the school day.
